Choose a firm mattress for your baby instead of a soft one – they need the support while they sleep. It shouldn’t be any thinner than 8cm. Just make sure it meets safety standards – mattresses should have the BSI number BS 1877-10:1997.

It’s safest for your baby to sleep in a cot, crib or moses basket in your room, next to your bed, for the first 6 months. You’ll be close by if they need to be fed or cuddled.

Children typically used cots aged between 2 – 3 years, and cot beds are typically used between 4 -5 years old.

Cots require a 60 cm x 120 cm mattress, and a cot bed requires a 70 cm x 140 cm mattress.

A cot bed is a cot that you can take the sides and end panel off of, which can then be turned into a bed for a toddler once they’re ready to transition.

Make sure the mattress is snug in the cot and meets the recommended dimensions for safety of the cot manufacturer. There should never be more than a 4cm gap between the edge of the mattress and the side of the cot when the mattress is pushed to the opposite side.

A changing table might be worth it in some cases. Babies only need a changing table for the first two years of their life. The table is just taking up space after that. So, it’s your call whether a changing table is worth the cost.

Will there be enough room to store clothes, toys, and changing table supplies? If not, you’ll probably have to get creative with your storage choices—especially if you don’t have a closet.

A chest of drawers can provide extra storage space in the nursery and is a great way to keep things organised.
